BRISTOL — Dominance.

It’s the one word that truly sums up Bristol Eastern’s performance against CCC Southern Division mate Plainville on Wednesday night.

In fact, for a good portion of the meet, the Lancers flirted with perfection — and not just in the team score category. Through the first eight matches of the night, the Blue Devil grapplers combined to post only one point in a bout. That point came on an Eastern infraction for an illegal headlock.

Plainville battled in the meets latter matches to pick up two wins. But by then the contest had already been decided long ago.

The Lancers won by a final tally of 64-9.

"It’s always nice to have a match go like this," Eastern coach Bryant Lishness said. "It builds the confidence of the guys — especially going into this weekend. A couple of the guys needed this match to try and get themselves back on track."

What lies ahead for the Lancers this weekend is meets with No. 5 Ledyard and No. 6 Fairfield Warde as well as East Lyme.

As for Wednesday, Plainville coach Rusty Spence said it was just one of those cases in which his young group of Blue Devils was simply overmatched.

"Honestly, I wasn’t really expecting much tonight," he said. "We’re in a major rebuilding stretch. Most of the wrestlers I send out there have no varsity experience and their being asked to fill spots."

Eastern took advantage of that Plainville inexperience.

It jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead on the strength of a Kyle Marquis major decision at 170 pounds and back-to-back forfeits at 182 and 195. Eastern 220-pounder Brett Akerly added six points to the Eastern advantage with an impressive performance against Plainville’s Tim West.

Fifty-two seconds into the second period, Akerly had West’s shoulders pinned to the mat. He didn’t let them off.

Heavyweight A.J. Manguel followed Akerly’s lead. Manguel pinned Mike Walton at 2:20. The pin came just over a minute after Manguel was penalized a point for an illegal headlock. It was the first point of the night for the Devils (2-14).

Dan Morocho (106) and Justin Paradis (113) made it four consecutive Eastern pins. The two combined to provide their team with 12 points in a total of just 1:12 of mat time.

A Plainville forfeit at 120 pounds made it 46-0, Lancers. As a result, with still six matches remaining, Eastern had already secured the victory.

"I was pleased with this," Lishness added. "Plainville is down a little right now, but they’re a good program and Rusty is a real good coach so I know that they’ll be back."

The Devils finally broke through in the 126-pound affair.

Senior captain Brian Lister, after trailing early, fought back to score a pin with 31 seconds showing on the second-period clock. "He’s dangerous," Spence said of Lister. "He’s also a great captain."

Lister’s victory was one of only two for the Blue Devils. Three matches later, Plainville’s Mischa Hoffman won a long 145-pound battle with Donovan Marciano. The match went into the third 30-second overtime with Hoffman prevailing 4-3.

Louis Morocho (132) and Christian St. Peter (152) both won by decision for the Lancers. Matt Marquis, at 160-pounds won by pin to cap Eastern’s dominant performance.

The win moved the Lancers to 8-3 on the year.
