NEW BRITAIN - Firefighters are still at the scene of an early morning house fire on Maple Street in New Britain that sent two families fleeing into the street.
Owner Joe Pena said he woke up to the smell of smoke at about 5:30 a.m. at his two-family home at 209 Maple St. and fled the house with his family. A family that lives on the first floor also escaped injury, he said.
"We were sleeping," Pena said when the blaze started. He said he had no idea what happened.
Noel Santana who lives next door said he woke up to his alarm at 5:30 a.m. and nothing was amiss. Within minutes however, his daughter alerted him that the house next door was on fire. "The whole side of the house was on fire," he said. "There were flames coming out of the sides of the house."
The smoke from the blaze could be seen throughout the south and east side of New Britain. Firefighters were still battling the blaze at 7:30 a.m.
