NEW BRITAIN – Back to where it all began.

Central Connecticut State University named Patrick Sellers the 11th head coach of the Blue Devils men’s basketball team Monday. Sellers graduated from CCSU in 1991 and also began his coaching career with the Blue Devils, serving as an assistant coach from 1999 to 2002.

"We are pleased to welcome back Mr. Sellers to the Blue Devil family, and we are counting on his leadership to help us rebuild our men's basketball program," CCSU President Zulma R. Toro said.

The Blue Devils won 81 games over the four seasons Sellers was an assistant, while also qualifying for the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and 2002. Central finished 57-19 in Northeast Conference action and snatched two regular season titles along the way.

"I am extremely grateful to President Toro and her leadership team, along with the search committee, for the opportunity to lead the Blue Devils. I have always had a special place in my heart for Central," Sellers said. "I look forward to adding to the successful legacy of Central Connecticut basketball and I am excited to get to work with our student-athletes."

After his stint at CCSU, Sellers spent one year at UMass, followed by seven seasons at UConn, including three seasons as an assistant for the Huskies. Sellers was key in recruiting Jeremy Lamb, Tyler Olander and Shabazz Napier who each played crucial roles in UConn’s national championship wins in 2011 and 2014.

"Patrick's experience in coaching is what we were looking for," Tom Pincince, interim director of Athletics, said. "His leadership qualities, vision and passion were evident throughout the interview process. He knows what it takes to be successful at CCSU and what the experience of being a Blue Devil does for our student-athletes."

Since then, Sellers has had stops at Hofstra (2011-13), Creighton (2013-15), DePaul (2015-17), Farleigh Dickinson (2017-19) and most recently, Fairfield (2019-21). With the Stags, Sellers aided their run to back-to-back double-figure win totals and helped them advance to the MAAC Tournament championship game this past season.

A native of South Carolina, Sellers was a Blue Devils team captain and was named the East Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1991. Sellers played professional basketball in the British Basketball League for three seasons before making the switch to coaching.

Sellers replaces Donyell Marshall who coached CCSU for the past five seasons, compiling a record of 40-104.

Sellers will be introduced in an event in Detrick Gymnasium soon as more information follows.
