NEWINGTON - Famously-delicious meatballs from a little spot in New Britain have arrived in Newington.

Former Max Pizza II owner Charlie VanBeveren took over the former Max Pizza V at 32 A Fenn Rd. (Super Stop & Shop plaza) and opened Vino’s Pizza.

That was around late February, so the Newington community is just getting acquainted with its newest restaurant for piping hot Italian specialties.

“I have great ties to New Britain and I’m looking to do the same thing here in Newington – build a good relationship with the community,” VanBeveren said.

He plans on contributing to Newington sports teams and school fundraisers, like he did in New Britain. At the same time, he hopes to continue supporting city groups.

For those who loved Max’s II, the Greek-style pies are here. So are “Gram’s Meatballs” – the recipe from VanBeveren’s Italian grandmother – as well as her beloved eggplant. There’s also a Sicilian-style crust, which is a little bit thicker.

Grinders, pasta, salads, seafood, burgers and appetizers round out the menu. The Tater Kegs are fried potato morsels shaped like kegs and filled with bacon and cheese.

Some of the dishes that have been popular among the Newington crowd so far include VanBeveren’s Philly cheese steak quesadilla, the stuffed shrimp pizza, and even a lasagna pie.

“It’s been good; everybody’s very friendly in town,” VanBeveren said.

His rolls and breads come from Mozzicato’s in Hartford and he also buys local products from Catanzaro’s in New Britain. Also check out the soups, homemade fresh every day.

And especially unique to the pizzeria atmosphere? Fresh Gifford’s ice cream, in lots of different flavors.

Vino’s does dine-in, takeout, curbside pickup and delivery 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Call to place an order, at 860-436-6008.
