PLAINVILLE - TyShawn Johnson and Omarion Miller made sure the Plainville boys basketball team was going to be playing in the final of the CCC Bracket No. 3 Tournament.
Johnson finished just shy of a triple-double with 27 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, while Miller contributed 24 points of his own as the Blue Devils won a back-and-forth game78-70 against Manchester on Thursday. Plainville will now play Conard in the bracket final on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
“TyShawn tore apart Manchester’s press,” head coach Scot Wenzel said.” He was able to get to the rim or find the open man. He does so much for us. TyShawn is one of the best point guards in the state. He proved that again tonight. Whatever Manchester threw at us he made them pay. He did it all for us.”
But Johnson and Miller weren’t the only two Plainville players to finish in double-figures. Alec Couture chipped in 13 points and Dylan Hall had 10.
Troy Butler led the Redhawks with a game-high 33 points. The next closest was Jared Linstrom with six.
As it turned out, the Blue Devils certainly needed a lot of contributions in what was a closely contested game for most of the night. The Redhawks held a one-point lead at the half with Plainville holding a single-point advantage after three quarters. It wasn’t until the fourth when the Blue Devils began pulling away thanks to outscoring Manchester 26-19 over the final eight minutes.
“Gutsy performance by my guys,” Wenzel said. “We gutted this one out tonight. We had an answer for every run Manchester made. Proud of the composure my guys showed.”
