NEWINGTON – Newington 19U American Legion picked up its first win of the season Sunday night, winning 2-1 in the season opener against Simsbury.
Sam Dionne and Jon Pyne each went three innings on the bump for Newington. Austyn Howe tossed one inning, earning the win in a combined two-hitter.
Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh, the leadoff baserunner in Sam Hurley was put on base after getting plunked. With one out, Ryan Saindon dropped won a bunt to more the runner over.
An error on the play moved each runner up a base, putting two in scoring position.
Simsbury had a wild pitch to bring Hurley in from third, evening the score at 1-1. Saindon advanced to third to put the game-winning run 90 feet away.
Nick Cox played hero, legging out an infield single to score Saindon after an overthrow at first base.
Saindon finished the night with two hits. Danny Crosue, Dom Bukowski and Nick Cox also had hits in the win.
Newington is back in action Thursday at 5:45 p.m., taking on West Hartford at home.
